Steven Gerrard has admitted that he does not envisage many more new faces to walk in through the door at Rangers this summer.
Speaking after their win against Olympique de Marseille (via Sky Sports), the Ibrox chief stated: “In terms of incomings, we’re near enough done. I always say near enough, you’re never done as a manager but there won’t be much more activity in terms of incomings.”
“We’ve got quality players in each position and we’ve got people fighting for places.”
Rangers have already been incredibly busy this summer as Gerrard continues to set about with his rebuilding efforts.
Filip Helander recently became the eighth new addition to the squad after he completed a £3.3million move from Bologna to provide the club with some additional support and strength in the backline, joining George Edmundson as they replace the gaps Gareth McAuley and Joe Worrall’s departures left.
The Swede was very impressive for the Serie A outfit last season, as his stats from WhoScored make for encouraging reading. He averaged 2.1 tackles per 90 mins and 0.7 interceptions in his 20 appearances, which will provide the likes of Connor Goldson and Nikola Katic with some stiff competition at the back.
Gerrard has also significantly boosted his midfield options with the permanent arrival of Steven Davis, whilst the additions of Joe Aribo, Sheyi Ojo, Jake Hastie, Jordan Jones and Greg Stewart should add to their attacking threat.
With the defence appearing to have been bolstered and the attack significantly improved with players that like to score goals (Aribo netted ten and provided a further five assists in his 39 League One appearances, whereas Stewart also scored ten and provided ten assists in his 36 matches across all competitions), Rangers look to be in a better position to challenge Celtic for the Scottish Premiership title in the upcoming campaign.
Making a number of additions is certainly not something Gerrard is shy about doing as he made 15 additions last season before making a further eight so far in the current transfer window, with Helander the latest arrival.
And with time still to go, it will be interesting to see what happens in the days leading up to deadline day even after the Liverpool legend’s comments.
With the likes of Alfredo Morelos still at the club, should he be sold (although there are yet to be any bids for him), it would not be a surprise if Rangers were forced to go all out for a new forward.
