Rangers: Steven Gerrard’s praise of Connor Goldson sparks mixed reaction from these ‘Gers fans

Rangers manager Steven Gerrard lauded the consistency of centre-back Connor Goldson in his press briefing on Friday morning, with his comments polarising opinion among some ‘Gers fans on social media. As per @RangersFC on Twitter, Gerrard said that the 27-year-old “has been extremely consistent”, adding that “you can always trust him”.

The manager has certainly trusted Goldson on a consistent basis, selecting him for every Premiership and Europa League game so far this season. Nobody else in the Light Blues’ squad has racked up more game-time in the current campaign than the 3,690 minutes played by the Englishman, a full 270 minutes more than the next most-used player Allan McGregor (as per TransferMarkt).

Goldson had been a transfer target for Leeds (Football Insider) and Fulham (Football Insider) in the January transfer window, with a match average of 4.7 successful headers testifying to his strength in the air. However, he has been criticised by a portion of Rangers fans for some of his performances this season, while ex-‘Gers defender Alan Hutton told Football Insider that the 27-year-old needs to eliminate “little mistakes” in the early stages of games.

Gerrard’s comments on Goldson sparked a mixture of opinion among these Rangers fans on Twitter, with some lauding the defender and others feeling that he is “average at best”:
