The Southampton fans gathered around the Transfer Tavern are hoping that their future is set to be brighter under Mark Hughes, after he thankfully steered them away from relegation troubles.
It wasn’t enjoyable for anyone involved for Southampton last season and if they’re to get back to their European contender role in the Premier League, Mark Hughes will need to be trusted with significant funds so he shapes his team. However, although fans assume that big money transfers are always the answer, our punters believe that targeting Colombia international Jefferson Lerma, (who is valued at £1.8 million on Transfermarkt) would be an influential signing and a good start for where they want to be next season.
The 23-year-old is currently on duty with Colombia at the World Cup and occupying the defensive midfielder position. Currently with Spanish side Levante, Lerma appeared 26 times in La Liga last season and was an essential player in the heart of midfield. The energetic defensive midfielder was wanted by Bournemouth earlier in the month, as they have already recognised the talent he possesses.

A partnership of Mario Lemina and Jefferson Lerma should be welcomed by Southampton as both players offer pace, trickery and contributions for the team in attack and defence. Whether Southampton have the power to attempt to beat South Coast rivals Bournemouth to the transfer of Lerma is unknown but it something they should definitely consider.
With Lerma currently at the World Cup, now is the perfect time for the Saints to assess his ability and see whether he is a player Southampton should pursue.
