Crystal Palace fans here in the Football Transfer Tavern are cannot believe how badly their side have started the season.

Sunday’s 1-0 defeat away to Burnley was the fourth defeat from four games and alongside the fact that the Eagles have failed to find the net this season, it took until Monday afternoon for the Palace hierarchy to announce that the club would be parting ways with Frank de Boer despite the Dutchman only taking over at Selhurst Park in the summer.

De Boer will likely be replaced by Roy Hodgson and, with this being the former England boss’ first job since the 2016 European Championships, there will be some points that need to be proved. Indeed, not just to the Palace punters in the Tavern, but the loyal followers of English football who spend the international breaks at the bar cheering on their nation.

Despite the Palace punters not being one hundred percent happy about the appointment of Hodgson, our landlord has fought the corner of the 70-year-old, but he has outlined three changes that must be made in order for the Eagles to start winning again.

Get Benteke involved

There is no doubt that Frank de Boer’s 3-4-3 formation alongside a possession based style of football alienated Christian Benteke. So, if Roy Hodgson is to be a success at Selhurst Park, he needs to implement a style of football that gets the best from the big Belgium.

Despite feeling their side was on the right track in playing attractive football, our Eagles in the Tavern agree and they feel the goals will only start flowing for their side once they get the best from Benteke.

Gauge the dressing room

One factor blamed by the Palace punters in the Tavern is that the Eagles’ squad refused to buy into the philosophy of Frank de Boer and if the same thing happens to Roy Hodgson, then his tenure is doomed.

Our landlord feels that if Hodgson can get the dressing room on side, then results will turn and he may well have a fruitful season at the helm of Crystal Palace.

Build a team around Zaha

There is no doubt that the downfall of Frank de Boer was not helped by the month long lay off to Wilfried Zaha and, with the Ivory Coast international on the mend, Hodgson may have him at his disposal sooner rather than later.

Once Zaha is back, our landlord believes it is vital that the Palace team is built around the winger due to his importance to the team. Our Palace fans agree and if Hodgson can get Zaha playing well – it will go a long way to the Eagles in the Tavern accepting this appointment.
