Wolves: Journalist casts doubt over Wanderers’ European chances

Henry Jackson 7 February 2022, 13:05 2 minutes read

Wolves’ lack of attacking firepower could prevent them from finishing in the European places this season, according to journalist Sami Mokbel.

The Lowdown: Wolves in superb form

Bruno Lage’s side may have been dumped out of the FA Cup by Norwich City at the weekend but they are still enjoying a strong run of form. Wolves have won their last three matches in the Premier League, including a famous 1-0 victory away to Manchester United, seeing them jump to eighth in the table.

It means that Wanderers are now just four points adrift of fourth-placed United, leading to hope that European football could be played at Molineux next season.

The Latest: Journalist bemoans Wolves’ lack of firepower

However, speaking to GiveMeSport, Mokbel claimed that a shortage of attacking quality could prove to be Wolves’ downfall in the coming months, having failed to significantly strengthen in that regard in the January transfer window.

When discussing the possibility of a European finish for Lage’s side, the journalist stated: “I think they’re ticking along really nicely, but I think the problem for Wolves is the goals. They’re certainly in the top half but they’ve only scored 19 goals this season, which is not a lot.”

The Verdict: Could it be an issue?

In truth, Wolves’ attack does seems to be their weakest area of the pitch, with the defence and midfield both outstanding of late – they boast the second-best defensive record in the Premier League, with just 16 goals conceded.

Wanderers have only scored 19 times in 21 league games, though, with Hwang Hee-chan and Raul Jimenez their top scorers with just four goals apiece.

Adama Traore moving to Barcelona on loan means that Wolves’ attacking options have been weakened, too, and the hope is that Pedro Neto makes a triumphant return from injury to help bolster the attack, or maybe that the likes of Fabio Silva can belatedly hit the goal trail.

In other news, Tim Spiers has provided a key Wolves injury update. Read more here.
