A big money signing is always going to have repercussions, especially at the highest level. Often, these repercussions can be hugely positive, especially if they go on to have a huge impact at the club. However, often less thought of are the negative results of a deal.
It’s a move that would undoubtedly generate a few negative responses from fans, but it seems likely that a few players would object, too.
After all, the 30-year-old – who is rated at £49.5 million by Transfer Markt – is a top-class forward, and whilst Chelsea’s midfielders would likely love to see him at Stamford Bridge, the reality is that some will be negatively affected by his arrival if he were to join.
Perhaps, then, a few departures could be on the horizon if Higuain ends up in SW6. But who could leave? Let’s take a look…
Alvaro Morata would be an obvious departee if Higuain joins Chelsea.
The Spaniard was signed by the club to be their number 9, and he isn’t likely to accept anything less than that.
However, Higuain is clearly a short-term solution for the Blues, and so you would expect him to be the main man going forward if he is signed.
That, then, could spell curtains for Morata. Not to mention, he’s far too talented and, more to the point, costly to spend his season on the bench waiting for an opportunity.
He’s out of form, and a year playing second-fiddle isn’t what he needs.
Michy Batshuayi is already the Blues’ third-choice forward – and so where would the arrival of Higuain leave him?
Sure, if Morata was to leave, he’d remain in the same position, but if Chelsea aren’t going to trust him now, will they ever do so?
The Belgian is coming off of a tremendous spell of form in Germany, and he needs to continue to play every single week. If he doesn’t, he could quickly revert to being a bit-part player at Stamford Bridge.
An interesting few weeks await for him, that’s for sure.
