A moment in time: Celtic’s 2003 UEFA Cup defeat

Celtic fans continue to hope that Neil Lennon won’t be given the full-time gig at Parkhead this summer. But as they don’t want Lennon the question comes up, who do the Bhoys want? There have been some very strange links recently, from Chris Sutton that have come via Independent.iethat claim Jose Mourinho has been offered the job.

A moment in time – Celtic reach the UEFA Cup final

The Hoops have just the one experience of facing Jose Mourinho and it came in one of the biggest games that they can remember. Back in 2003, the Hoops travelled to Sevilla for the UEFA Cup final where they’d be coming up against Porto. It was a humdinger of a game too. Five goals and two red cards made the 120 minutes thoroughly entertaining, even if at the end of the clash the Portuguese side lifted the trophy.

Now, with Mourinho potentially (dubiously reported, granted) taking up the hot seat at Parkhead the Bhoys have a lot of hope that if he does come in at Glasgow, not only can he stop Steven Gerrard in his tracks and prevent Rangers from getting anywhere near any trophies in the Scottish domestic scene. Maybe, just maybe, he could even go as far as to avenging that 2003 European heartbreak by making a name for the Hoops in Europe.

Europe is the one nut that the Celtic fans have yet to see cracked in the recent run of incredible form down the years. Eight Scottish Premiership titles in a row, potentially threepeating the treble and winning 16 domestic honours, should they be able to overcome Hearts on Saturday. Mourinho, though, would be able to carry on that domestic dominance whilst giving it a go on the continent.

Losing to Porto back in that final is a still a painful memory for the Bhoys, but considering Mourinho’s Porto went on to win the Champions League just one year later and now they could be set to welcome the Portuguese serial winner they can finally put it behind them for good. The chances are it will take time if the Hoops are to conquer Europe, but Mourinho would be the man for the job.
