This article forms part of our Total Duds feature series, which is where Football Transfer Tavern takes a look at how a player has fared since being signed or sold, using statistical figures and statements from pundits to prove how bad a deal the club got.
Rangers have made some astute signings in recent years.
The first one that jumps to mind is Alfredo Morelos. Purchased for £1.08m from HJK Helsinki, the Colombia international has scored 29 goals this season alone and now has a Transfermarkt value of £10.8m. Others, such as Allan McGregor and Borna Barisic have become regulars for Steven Gerrard since making the switch to Ibrox.
Is Alfredo Morelos Rangers' best player?
However, they haven’t always been successful in the transfer market, as Eduaro Herrera can prove. Signed for £1.53m in 2017, he failed to show he was worth anywhere near that sum.
The striker had been rather handy with UNAM Pumas in the Mexican top tier, having scored 56 goals in 187 games. Such was the level of his displays, he even earned caps for Mexico – he has managed three strikes in nine appearances to date. Whilst there was no guarantee he would be a success at Ibrox, there will have been hope that he could reproduce the form from his homeland.
It ended up being quite the opposite. He managed just 24 appearances in his first – and only – campaign with the Glasgow outfit, scoring a paltry two goals. In the summer of 2018, he was loaned out to Santos Laguna, a spell which lasted six months, before moving to Nexaca for a year. In January 2020, he finally left permanently, moving to Puebla – and it is fair to say the Rangers fans won’t miss him.
For every McGregor, there is a Herrera. His transfer was one of Mark Allen’s biggest mistakes during his time at the club.
