Rangers defender Jon Flanagan came in for strong criticism from a number of the club’s fans following his performance on Wednesday night.
The 27-year-old was selected at right-back against St Mirren in place of the injured James Tavernier, coming in for his first appearance since the draw at Aberdeen in early December. However, the one-time England international didn’t make any great impact in the hard-fought 1-0 win at Ibrox.
While Tavernier has been a consistently reliable creative outlet on the right for Rangers this season, with 12 assists for the campaign to date, Flanagan has now featured in nine matches this term and is yet to be involved in a goal.
The ex-Liverpool man received reasonably good reviews from some reporters after the game. James Black of Rangers News felt that he had a “decent showing” despite saying he didn’t offer much going forward, while Ayush Chaurasia of The 4th Official commended his “no-nonsense performance” with “nothing too flashy but got the job done”.
Despite those mostly positive assessments from reporters, these Rangers fans on Twitter looked upon Flanagan’s performance far less favourably, with one castigating him as an “absolutely horrendous footballer”:
Jon Flanagan should never play another professional game for Rangers ever again

Jon Flanagan can not play on Sunday, offers nothing other than being relatively solid at the back. Glad we can put the 'aye but he's playing at left back' argument to bed as well, simply not good enough.

Can Flanagan leave in January too?

Did Flanagan win a competition or something

We badly need cover for our full back positions and a striker!
How poor is Flanagan!!
Patterson to start on Sunday 👍
