Former Rangers defender Alan Hutton has described the Light Blues’ on-loan winger Sheyi Ojo as “a very good player” but has said that he needs to perform more consistently.
The 22-year-old, who was loaned to Ibrox for the season by Liverpool last summer, has made 27 appearances so far this term but not always managed to hold down a place in Steven Gerrard’s starting line-up, as per TransferMarkt.
Who should Rangers' penalty taker be?
Hutton believes that Ojo’s preferred right winger position is up for grabs at Rangers, with Greg Stewart, Jordan Jones, Brandon Barker and Eros Grezda all capable of playing there, but feels that he must show greater consistency in order to make the position his own.
Speaking about Ojo to Football Insider, Hutton said: “There are a few people vying for that front-right position, in flashes he has shown that he is a very good player.
“The thing with him is, he isn’t consistent enough for me and probably for Gerrard as it is a position he rotates.
“Ojo is in then he is out, Stewart can play there, Jones can too but he is injured, so that tells me he isn’t totally convinced. I think he is a very good player but he needs to be more consistent.”
Hutton is right to call for greater consistency from the 22-year-old winger, who has proven to be capable of making a huge impact in games when he is at his best.
In the space of five days back in August, Ojo scored two goals and set up another three across matches against Hibernian and FC Midtjylland, while he had started eight of Rangers’ first 11 Premiership games this season. [via TransferMarkt]
More recently, he recorded two assists in the 5-0 thrashing of Hearts at the start of this month even though he only played 23 minutes off the bench – that was as many as he has supplied in his 10 previous league games beforehand. [via TransferMarkt]
Ojo hasn’t started any of the Light Blues’ last four league matches and was left on the bench for the entirety of the Betfred Cup final defeat to Celtic on Sunday. [via TransferMarkt]
Only two players in Gerrard’s squad have scored more than his five goals so far this season, while just three men have surpassed his tally of seven assists – and all of those are either centre-forwards or full-backs, so none of Rangers’ wingers have been involved in more goals than Ojo in 2019/20. Despite playing for 77 minutes in the draw against Feyenoord two weeks ago, he recorded just 18 passes, the lowest of anyone in Gerrard’s starting line-up that night (as per WhoScored).
Also, Ojo has not scored since the win over the Dutch outfit at the start of the Europa League group stage nearly three months ago, a barren spell which discolours his scoring statistics for the season to date.
As Hutton has said, the 22-year-old can be a very effective presence on the right-hand side of Rangers’ attack, something that is evident from his number of goal involvements, but long spells without a goal or assist suggest that Ojo’s form can dip drastically.
Also, his lack of starts recently and omission from the Betfred Cup final action may indicate that Gerrard doesn’t have the utmost trust in the winger.
