TT Battle: Sam Cosgrove vs Alfredo Morelos

Not bad options, are they? Ahead of the Scottish Cup quarter-final replay between Rangers and Aberdeen, there is a debate between fans of the respective clubs as to whose starting striker is the better. Although Sam Cosgrove is suspended for the tie, it still remains very timely to discuss the impacts of both Cosgrove and Alfredo Morelos.

Both forwards have played their part in helping their side to this position in the Scottish Cup. Cosgrove had played in all their games in the competition this season, netting four goals in four games, including a penalty against Rangers in the first quarter-final between the two sides.

Morelos, on the other hand, has played just twice in the competition and has also scored four, with all of them coming against Kilmarnock in the replay of the last round, but let’s discuss the players’ wider impact on their sides beyond this competition.

Sam Cosgrove

Cosgrove has stepped up to the plate significantly this season. Having scored just one goal in his first 48 senior games across non-league, the English football league and the Scottish Premiership, he now has 18 goals across all competitions this season with his tally of 14 in the Scottish Premiership being the second highest in the division.

The 22-year-old has been clinical in and around the box for Aberdeen this season. It is that goalscoring prowess which will be missed against Rangers but he will be sure to play a pivotal part in the rest of their campaign in the league and potentially the cup, dependant on the result.

TT Grade: B+

Alfredo Morelos

If Steven Gerrard opts for a very similar side to the first game in the quarter-final between the two sides, Morelos will surely make impact the game heavily. It is unusual to see the 22-year-old go without scoring in two games and given his record this season, that will not last very long.

Morelos has 28 goals across all competitions and it the 16 he has bagged in the League that is the only tally to exceed Cosgrove’s this season.

His link-up play has been key to the involvement of his fellow forwards and that will be pivotal once again in this tie. So, the battle between the Gers’ attackers and the Dons’ backline, particularly between Morelos and Scott McKenna, will make it very interesting to see who comes out on top.

TT Grade: A

Although Cosgrove does, in fact, have a slightly better minutes per goal ratio in the league, Morelos offers more on the whole in addition to his goals via his interlinking moves with teammates and impeccable work-rate. Cosgrove does have the potential to display more of that side of his game, more often, which will help make him a more complete striker, but Morelos displays that in his game now along with the goals and therefore, deserves to be held in higher regard.
