The Championship promotion race took yet another twist last night as Sheffield United failed to capitalise on their game in hand over Leeds United.
The Blades, who were two points behind their rivals before kick-off, faced a Birmingham City side who were brimming with confidence after their victory last week over the Whites.
United took the lead through an unlikely source as Enda Stevens scored his first goal of the season by firing past Blues goalkeeper Lee Camp in what was their only shot on target in the opening 45 minutes. Undeterred by going behind to Chris Wilder’s side, Birmingham responded almost immediately as captain Michael Morrison tapped in from close range after Dean Henderson had saved an effort from Gary Gardner.
The second period saw both sides have chances to secure all three points with the Blades coming close via a David McGoldrick header whilst Che Adams and Jota were denied by Henderson. With the game ending in a draw, the real winners on the night were Leeds who not only remained above Wilder’s side but also closed in on Norwich City who were held by Reading at Carrow Road.
Having seen their club drop out of the automatic promotion places, these Blades supporters reacted on Twitter to the performance at Birmingham.

United can move above Leeds on Saturday, albeit briefly, if they can secure a vital victory away at Millwall with the race for the top-two expected to go right down to the wire in the second tier.
