Sheffield United News

Undoubtedly, Sheffield United have been one of the biggest success stories in the Premier League this season, surging up the table and beating the likes of Arsenal and Everton in the process.

Amid all the talk of European football, here at the Transfer Tavern, we have created a page focusing purely on the Blades, bringing fans all the daily Sheffield United news coverage about Chris Wilder’s men.

Sheffield United history

United was formed all the way back in 1889 as an offshoot of Yorkshire County Cricket Club and Sheffield Cricket Club. The Blades started in the Football League Second Division and were the first team ever to gain promotion to the First Division a year later.

Sheffield spent 37 seasons in the top flight, which is still an unbeaten record to this day. Ever since the side’s formation, they have played all their home games at Bramall Lane, which they shared with the cricket club up until 1973.

Upgrading the stadium came at a hefty cost, as the redevelopment crippled the board financially, and the Red and Whites slumped down to the Fourth Division. After battling back from debts worth over millions of pounds, United became founding members of the Premier League in 1992.

Following a Saudi takeover, Wilder’s squad are back in the English top tier for the third time in their history.

How many trophies have Sheffield United won?

Sheffield lifted the league trophy for the only time so far in 1897/1898, thanks to performances from legendary players like Bill “Fatty” Foulke, Ernest Needham and Walter Bennett. The club have won the FA Cup four times, with the most recent victory dating back to 1925.

Sheffield United facts

The Yorkshire side are nicknamed the Blades in recognition of the city’s history of steel production. They were originally known as the Cutlers, as bitter rivals Sheffield Wednesday claimed the nickname at the start. However, after the Owls moved to Owlerton, United repurposed the iconic name for themselves.

Bramall Lane also hosted the first ever game under floodlights back in 1878, before United was even formed.

Who are Sheffield United’s rivals?

Wednesday are the Blades’ oldest rivals, and they have contested the Steel City derby over the years. Leeds United, Barnsley, Doncaster Rovers and Rotherham United are also considered county rivals.
