Sam Hutchinson was forced to play in a relatively unfamiliar position in Sheffield Wednesday’s 0-0 draw against Leeds United on Saturday.
The 30-year-old usually plays in central midfield, but after Julian Borner picked up an injury in the warm-up the former Chelsea man had to play at centre-back.
Owls fans would have been worried that the late change could have had a negative impact for them, but in truth, Hutchinson played very well in the heart of defence.
Indeed, he made a huge eight clearances in the match, whilst also making three interceptions, two clearances and blocking one shot, finishing with a match rating of 7.35 (via WhoScored).
Crucially he helped Wednesday keep a clean sheet against the Whites, and the draw keeps them just one point behind their Yorkshire rivals in the table and firmly in the promotion picture (BBC Sport).
It is currently unknown how bad Borner’s injury is, but Hutchinson’s performance alongside Dominic Iorfa will have pleased manager Garry Monk who now knows the midfielder is more than comfortable playing at centre-back.
After the game, plenty of Sheffield Wednesday fans rushed to praise Hutchinson on Twitter for his performance. Here is what some of them had to say…
Apart from that one hiccup, Hutch was immense!
