Sheffield Wednesday: Owls’ interest in Kemar Roofe is ‘legit’

Sheffield Wednesday‘s interest in signing Rangers attacker Kemar Roofe this summer is ‘legit’, according to reliable journalist Dom Howson.

The Lowdown: Roofe interest emerges

The Owls are enjoying a productive summer transfer window, bringing in a host of players and arguably starting the new League One season as favourites for automatic promotion.

Wednesday have recently been linked with a move for Roofe, with the 29-year-old impressing for Rangers, scoring 34 goals in 72 appearances, including one of the goals of the decade in a Europa League clash vs Standard Liege.

It is certainly an exciting transfer rumour and one that would add serious firepower to the Owls’ ranks.

The Latest: Howson provides key update

Writing in a Q&A for The Yorkshire Examiner, Howson claimed that the Owls see Roofe as a genuine transfer target, although a move is still a long way from happening:

“I think Wednesday’s interest in Roofe is legit. I mentioned a couple of weeks ago that Wednesday were considering moving on from Wilks to other transfer targets.

“Nothing has changed on the Wilks asking price front. Hull are holding out for more cash. Wednesday will not be held to ransom given Wilks has less that a year left to run on his contract.

“Roofe is on their extensive shortlist of attacking options. It sounds unlikely at this stage that Roofe will happen. There’s interest in him from elsewhere and his wages could be a potential stumbling block.”

The Verdict: The ideal summer signing

Acquiring Roofe’s signature could be the icing on the cake for Wednesday this summer, giving them a forward line that would be the envy of League One, and maybe even some Championship clubs.

The Rangers man, who’s racked up 105 career club goals, could adopt a left-sided role in an attack that also includes Lee Gregory and new signing Michael Smith, giving Darren Moore great ammunition in the final third.

Whether or not Roofe ends up at Hillsborough remains to be seen – the Gers are sure to want to keep hold of him – but it could be a significant purchase if it ends up going through, with Steven Gerrard once describing his aforementioned wonder-goal as ‘genius’.
