The Manchester United fans here in the Transfer Tavern are hoping that Jose Mourinho can get rid of some deadwood in the squad and bring in some more new faces ahead of what is going to be one of the Portuguese’s toughest seasons to date.

Manchester United are having their best season since they last won the Premier League back in 2013 under current boss Mourinho. The Red Devils have had a fair few poor seasons in recent times, which has not gone down well with our local Mancs in the bars’ high standards.

Despite winning the Europa League and League Cup last season, United finished outside the Champions League spots once again, which was a huge disappointment to many of the regulars in the bar. However, the cup wins are great and bode well for a day out for the fans, but they would surely much prefer a good league run and be challenging for the top spot each season.

With summer approaching, Mourinho has his fifth transfer window to make this United squad into Premier League Champions before he leaves. Some players have let him down this season and he should surely look to shift out some deadwood. This could all start with these TWO players…

Chris Smalling

Currently, there are five centre-backs all fighting for two starting spots within the team. Some have impressed this season and some haven’t been up to the level that’s expected of them so far, much to Mourinho’s frustration.

Unfortunately for Smalling, he’s a player that falls into the latter camp with his inconsistent performances.

He has had peaks and troughs in his United career and he still makes many of the United faithful in the pub nervous when he’s named in the matchday squad.

Matteo Darmian

The Italian full-back since his arrival at Old Trafford hasn’t done much to impress our regulars in the back-room. He’s certainly dropped further down the pecking order in recent months and his game time has reduced immensely.

A move out of United would be the best thing for Matteo Darmian at this point in his career, and Mourinho would surely be willing to let him go, whatever the price.

The need for full-backs has greatly reduced much to the form of Antonio Valencia and Ashley Young this season while Darmian warms the stands from afar.
