The Liverpool fans in the Transfer Tavern are desperate for the Daniel Sturridge of old to return…
When the Englishman moved to Anfield from Chelsea, he set the Premier League alight. Forming a deadly partnership with Luis Suarez, he was incredible in front of goal, and a career-best tally of 21 league goals left the Chelsea fans in the pub rueing their side’s decision to sell him
However, since that point, it has been all downhill for him. A mix of fitness issues, a lack of form and a managerial change have taken their toll, and he looks a different player today.
In his last outing against Newcastle, the Englishman really struggled, and the fans in the Transfer Tavern are beginning to give up on the prospect of him ever coming good.
This is a sentiment that Sky Sports pundit Graeme Souness agrees with, and he fears that Sturridge may not get another chance anytime soon. He said: “Today [Sunday] he looked like a player that hadn’t trained properly and prepared for his opportunity. It might be a month or another six weeks before Jurgen Klopp goes with him again. I thought he was so disappointing today”.
Jurgen Klopp, of course, can’t rely on a player that isn’t performing when called upon, and Sturridge definitely falls under that banner.
Roberto Firmino has typically been preferred throughout this campaign, and as Souness says, it will be a while yet until he’s dropped for Sturridge again.
