Sonny Blu Lo-Everton – his career so far

Without a shadow of a doubt, Sonny Blu Lo-Everton is one of the highest-rated young players currently residing in Watford’s academy. Named after the colour of the sky on a summer’s day, the 17-year-old gem has been impressing the right people during his spells with the development squads and is already being touted as a future prospect as one of the Hornets.

Lo-Everton has been with Watford ever since he was only six years of age, signed and recruited into the youth set up north of the border in 2011 by Malky Mackay, the former Watford manager and now Performance Director at the Scottish FA.

The now 17-year-old has regularly played up an age group, including at the start of last season when he played a U23 game against Nottingham Forest when he was aged only 15. His extraordinary talent meant he was also a regular feature in both the U18 squad and occasionally joining the older squad as well as training with the first team at times.

Both Quique Sánchez Flores and Nigel Pearson saw the talent hiding behind the inexperienced exterior of the youngster and Lo-Everton has been praised on numerous occasions by the officials in the club’s upper hierarchy.

Even though he is yet to make his grand debut with the senior team of the Hornets, that could very well be more a matter of time than anything else. Not to mention that he already has some national team pedigree as he is already a fixture in Scotland’s U19 side, making his debut against Andorra in October and being part of the huge 1-0 triumph over Germany as well.

If these early signs are anything to go by, Lo-Everton has a huge future ahead of him and it will be up to Watford to ensure he develops and succeeds at the club as one of the Hornets. When it comes to naturally gifted players, the 17-year-old truly could be one destined for greatness.

Transfer latest

Since we are still talking about a 17-year-old kid who’s had no exposure to the senior team and is yet to become a regular presence in the U23 squad, it doesn’t surprise that there are no real transfer rumours or transfer news surrounding the talented lad at the moment.

Of course, with the Watford news of him participating in some of the senior team training session surfacing recently, it’s pretty safe to say that Lo-Everton is definitely on the right path and is climbing the ladder as expected.

In some other Watford news, the 17-year-old was named as the team’s most talented youngster in the top 20 young players from Premier League teams in 2019 by the Guardian, which is further testament to his potential.

Player profile

Lo-Everton is a highly creative attacking midfielder that can function well across the final third and be deployed both as a winger and as a centre-forward. He is, however, best utilised just behind the striker where he can be given enough freedom to roam and influence the play across the final third, not just inside the box.

He is quite well known for his extraordinary technique and quick feet, managing to both beat his markers in duels and also progress the ball and set his teammates up with brilliant passes in advanced areas.

But he’s also been praised for having an eye for goal and a deadly strike that can catch the opposition off guard and often rattle the inside of their net. Of course, with his limited exposure to the older development squads, it will take some time before we can form a clearer picture of his player profile.

The early signs, however, are more than just good.
