The foundations of the club can be tracked all the way back to 1881, when Watford Rovers was originally formed by Henry Grover. Two years later, their name was changed to West Herts, they joined the Southern League Division two in 1896 and turned professional the year after. However, in 1898 the rival town club Watford St Mary’s was absorbed, and the club was then known as Watford. The Hornets were soon promoted to the Southern League Division one as champions in 1900.

Vicarage Road became the home stadium of Watford in 1992, although the costs of the move proved difficult for Watford as they faced many financial issues for a number of seasons. Watford have always struggled to compete against other top flight clubs, and their honours are not notable. However, the Hornets should be proud of their climb to the Premier League in recent years. From the Southern Football League, they ranked through the English Football League, starting in the Fourth Division. Boyhood Watford fan, Sir Elton John was chairman and owner of the club when they rose from the Fourth Division to the First Division from the 1970s to the 80s.

They are currently enjoying their longest run competing in the Premier League, after unlucky spells in Start of the Millennium, as well as 2006/07, being relegated back to the Championship on both occasions. In 2015 however, they were promoted back up to the top flight, and have managed to stay up since.

The Hornets all-time record goal-scorer is former forward Luther Blisset who scored an honourable 186 goals in 503 games for the club, during three separate spells at Vicarage Road starting in the 1975/76 season. Johns Barnes is another Watford Legend, the skilful winger managed 83 goals, and debuted at the young age of 17 before earning his transfer to Liverpool in 1987.

Current club captain, Troy Deeney will surely go down in the history books for his commitment to the club, and for his impressive 123 goals for the Hornets – get the latest player news from Vicarage Road here.
