A selection of Southampton fans cannot believe what an AFC Bournemouth supporter has done, following the Cherries’ win in the two side’s Premier League encounter last month.
Eddie Howe’s Vitality Stadium natives travelled to the Saints on September 20 looking to record their first win in Southampton in their club’s history, with Bournemouth’s only triumphs over the St. Mary’s natives preceding the latest encounter coming on Cherries soil (11v11).
Bournemouth had beaten Southampton just once since their promotion into the Premier League, as well, which they achieved in March 2016 after losing the reverse encounter 2-0.
The Saints bounced back from their first defeat to Bournemouth since 1987 to win at the Vitality Stadium the following December, with a result that sparked a six-game unbeaten streak between the two sides heading into September’s meeting.
Southampton also carried a four-game unbeaten streak across all competitions as they welcomed Bournemouth to St. Mary’s last month, where first-half goals by Nathan Ake and Harry Wilson put the visitors ahead inside 35 minutes.
James Ward-Prowse pulled one back for Ralph Hasenhuttl’s side from the spot shortly after the break but was unable to prevent Howe’s men from taking their first win in Southampton when Callum Wilson restored the Cherries’ two-goal advantage deep into stoppage-time.
Despite the result, Southampton held the upper hand for much of the encounter, with the Saints enjoying 64.8% of possession, completing 77% of their passes to Bournemouth’s 59% and unleashing 25 shots to the Cherries’ six (WhoScored).
A want of accuracy potentially deprived Hasenhuttl of the win, though, as only six of his side’s 25 efforts found the target, and 21-year-old goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale stood firm to save each, while parrying danger twice.
To celebrate the result, one Bournemouth fan has purchased a replica version of the Cherries’ 2019/20 away jersey, and had printed on it the date of the fixture.
