Tuesday night won’t be forgotten in a hurry for Southampton fans, who witnessed their side teach fierce rivals Portsmouth a footballing lesson in their own backyard.
A first-half brace from Saints striker Danny Ings paved the way for the visitors, who added two more goals in the second half through full-back Cedric Soares and substitute Nathan Redmond.
The game finished 4-0, and Saints now have the bragging rights in Hampshire for the foreseeable future. With the two sides currently separated by two divisions, it’s unlikely they will be meeting again in a hurry.
The undoubted Man Of The Match was Danny Ings, who, as mentioned, found the back of the net twice for his side in the first half. His first was a quality finish from the edge of the box after a clever turn eluded the Portsmouth defence, while his second was another neat finish from close-range following a superb through ball from teenager Michael Obafemi.
Southampton fans are still buzzing about the performance at Fratton Park, with some even calling for Ings to be given the freedom of the city!
