Ings has been a revelation at St Mary’s since signing from Liverpool on an initial loan deal back in 2018. The striker registered seven goals and three assists in 24 Premier League matches whilst on loan in 2018/19 (via Sofascore). That was enough to convince the Saints to make the move permanent for around £20 million.
Last season saw Ings fully repay the faith shown in him by registering an impressive tally of 22 goals in 38 Premier League matches, an impressive ratio of 0.6 goals per match (Sofascore). Not since the days of Matt Le Tissier and later James Beattie have the Saints had a player in the top-flight delivering goals at such an impressive rate.
The 28-year-old has carried that form into this season, managing to register four league goals already. That sort of prolonged form could potentially make him a target for another one of the Premier League’s top six clubs, and unsurprisingly reports have now emerged that he is set to sign a new deal with the club, per The Athletic’s David Ornstein.
However, it is thought that the new deal could see him have a release clause added into his contract, which would put Southampton in a very weak negotiating position if anyone were to stump up that fee, whatever it my be. Saints fans have been reacting on Twitter, and while they are of course thrilled to extend their star man’s deal, plenty of fans highlighted the release clause as a ‘concern’.
Southampton fans react as Danny Ings closes in on new deal
Happy to hear that Ings may sign a new deal, but the issue with a release clause is that you are basically setting the max fee you’re getting, so not much chance of a bidding war. Whatever it is, it’ll be affordable to the big four. That’s a concern. #saintsfc

Possible release clause doesn’t sound too promising he obviously wants a big move

No need for the release clause. If that’s the case, let’s hope it’s ridiculously high

Had to ruin it by saying a release clause

A contract with a release clause is just a piece of paper .

I don’t like the sound of a potential release clause 🙄😂
