According to Dan Sheldon, Southampton have entered talks with goalkeeper Alex McCarthy in regards to a new contract at the club.
Over the last couple of seasons, McCarthy has become the Saints’ number one goalkeeper – so far this campaign, he has played in 23 of the team’s 24 games in the Premier League (Transfermarkt). At 31 years of age, he should have plenty of time left in the sport – the careers of shot-stoppers are generally longer than those of outfield players.
The £5.85m-valued man’s (Transfermarkt) current deal is set to run out at the end of the next season, but it seems Ralph Hasenhuttl and co are eager to see him stay with the team beyond then. The discussions are still at any early stage, but the Saints are hoping an agreement will be reached.
The news has attracted plenty of attention from the supporters, and they seem torn by the news. Some are eager for him to remain at St. Mary’s, but others would be happy to see him leave.
Should McCarthy be given a new deal?
They took to social media platform Twitter to share their thoughts.
Let’s see what the fans had to say about the McCarthy news below
“Not sure about this one goalkeeping area needs a freshen up in my opinion”
“Hope this isn’t true, overpaid championship player”
“Very good to hear, for most games he’s quality, he’s obviously not perfect and does make mistakes, but we’ve got other areas to prioritise this summer over looking for a new keeper.”
“Brilliant news. A top keeper that some fans like to abuse because of 1 or 2 errors. Outstanding for us over the last 4 years or so and still fit”
“now my days ruined”
In other news, Southampton fans react to a video of this former star.
