Southampton fans have been reacting to the news that the club made a loss of £76.1m during the 2019/20 financial year.
On the pitch, things have been going rather well recently for Saints. As it stands, they are seventh in the Premier League table, having won eight of their first 17 games. One of those victories came in their last league match against Liverpool, who they defeated 1-0.
Off the pitch, though, things do not look quite as rosy. Clubs up and down the country are having to deal with reduced revenue due to the coronavirus pandemic, and it seems that the south-coast outfit have been hit particularly hard by the situation.
Does this news worry you?
The Southampton fans have been reacting in their droves to the news, and they took to social media platform Twitter to share their thoughts, as some supporters lashed out at Gao Jisheng while others admitted they ‘fear for the future’ of clubs lower down the football pyramid.
Let’s see what the Southampton fans had to say below
“Well done gao”
“I fear for the future for many clubs outside the Premier League! Southampton have recorded a loss of £76million during 2019-20, and this only partially includes the period of Covid where St Mary’s is empty Dark times ahead for our game”
“If that’s the effect it’s had on a top flight club I hate to imagine the situation lower league clubs are at. Tough times indeed”
“Disaster, think we will have to sell a few players this summer to compensate.”
“that net losses man, its like saying good bye to 3-5 key players already”
“Doesn’t sound great for the Ings contract though, does it Adam?”
