Southampton: Saints among trio of Premier League sides watching Glen Kamara ahead of potential move - Southampton Transfer Rumours

Southampton have been monitoring the performances of Rangers midfielder Glen Kamara ahead of a potential move for the 25-year-old in the January transfer window.

Kamara has emerged as an integral part of Rangers’ side this season as they have enjoyed a strong start to the campaign, holding a six-point cushion over second-placed Celtic in the Scottish Premiership. The 25-year-old had been the subject of interest from a host of clubs in the summer including Burnley, Newcastle United, Sheffield United and Brighton, per TEAMtalk.

Saints in strong position to add to their squad

Southampton have made a strong start to the Premier League season, with the Saints picking up as many wins in their opening six matches as they did in their first 14 games last term. Such impressive form means that, as opposed to last January, Ralph Hasenhuttl’s side could be well away from any relegation danger, which may make it easier for them to attract players.

What year were Southampton founded?

That could prove vital in securing a deal for Kamara. The Finland international, who has 21 caps for his country, has also been watched by the likes of Leeds United and Everton from the Premier League and Monaco, Lille and Borussia Dortmund, per TEAMtalk, so Southampton are likely to face a battle to secure his signature.

Rangers are also thought to be keen to extend Kamara’s new contract after his excellent start to the campaign, with Steven Gerrard fearing an exit could be on the cards, per TEAMtalk. The midfielder still has two years left to run on his existing deal, but the Scottish giants remain keen to ensure he commits his long-term future to the Ibrox club.

Glen Kamara would suit Hasenhuttl’s side

Kamara is capable of delivering the sort of high energy performances in midfield that Hasenhuttl demands from his players. The 25-year-old has averaged 0.9 interceptions and 0.7 tackles per game, as well as also averaging 0.9 key passes and maintaining an impressive 92% passing accuracy so far this term (Sofascore).

That level of all-round ability has made him a crucial player at Rangers and seen Gerrard label him as ‘superb’. Southampton will therefore need to move fast to secure his signature and the Saints should back Hasenhuttl with the funds needed to get him in the January transfer window.
