Southampton team news: Danny Ings a doubt for League Cup tie

Southampton will meet Leicester City at the King Power Stadium on Tuesday night for a place in the next round of the League Cup.

A place in the quarter-final against Manchester City awaits the winner and Mark Hughes will want to see his side improve on their defeat to Fulham in the Premier League at the weekend.

However, it appears as though he could be without a key man for the game against the Foxes.

According to the club’s official website, Danny Ings is a ‘big doubt’ for the game as it is believed the rescheduled cup tie may have come too quickly for him.

The striker was absent for their defeat to Fulham on Saturday and his absence was clearly felt up top.

Mohamed Elyounoussi made an appearance from the substitutes bench as he managed to overcome a minor hamstring concern, whilst Angus Gunn is likely to return in goal after his heroics in the penalty shoot-out against Everton in the previous round.

The Verdict:

Southampton have been struggling in the Premier League this season and the pressure is thought to be building on Hughes.

A cup run could be exactly what the Saints need to start putting together a number of results and performances to help them try and find what works for them when they take back to the pitch in the top-flight.

Ings potentially absence will be a blow for the St. Mary’s Stadium outfit, but Charlie Austin and Manolo Gabbiadini will look to build some much-needed confidence in front of goal.
