Southampton would finally replace Van Dijk with clever swoop on £5.4m-rated lynchpin

The Southampton fans in and around the Transfer Tavern are more optimistic in thinking that their owners realise the need for them to spend big this summer, so a repeat of last season is not possible.

Having almost lost their place in the Premier League last season, Southampton will be looking to add quality into their depleted side, in an array of positions. Their biggest mistake arguably last season was not replacing Virgil Van Dijk, when he made his long awaited move to Liverpool in January. The £75 million wasn’t spent as it could have been and the Saints should look at spending some of that on Toulouse centre-back Christopher Jullien, who is valued at £5.4 million on Transfermarkt.

The 25-year-old has been an important player for the French outfit again this season, demonstrated by his 36 total appearances, in which he managed to help his team to 12 clean-sheets in that period. Julien has also been their captain for games this season, showing that as well as his defensive contributions, his leadership and confidence from the back is something that a shaky Southampton back-line needs.

With Van Dijk never being replaced by Southampton, they were always asking for trouble by not replacing a man who has been a rock for them in his short time at St Marys, of which that form has been shown at Anfield also.

Julien isn’t a massive name in world football but his contributions to the French league have been brilliant and given the chance to perform in the Premier League with Southampton could let us fans see his best form…
