Cristian Romero, Tottenham, Spurs, Premier League

Argentina manager Lionel Scaloni has shared an injury update regarding Tottenham Hotspur defender Cristian Romero ahead of the World Cup in Qatar.

The Lowdown: Romero’s injury issues

The centre-back has missed Spurs’ four previous Premier League games with a hamstring injury, but has still been included in Argentina’s squad for the upcoming tournament.

With the finals set to get underway in a few days, and the Albiceleste playing their first match on Tuesday against Saudi Arabia, it appears that an injury update has emerged regarding the Tottenham defender.

The Latest: Romero injury update

Speaking to the media ahead of Wednesday’s friendly match against the United Arab Emirates, Scaloni gave an update on the fitness of various members of the Argentina squad.

He said: “Nicolas Tagliafico trained separately because he played the other day and came tired from the trip. We prefer that you do not train but you have no problem, in principle it will be available.

“Marcos Acuna missed the last games of his team, he has been dragging a problem, I think he had a blow to the twin. We will evaluate it in the training.

“And Cuti Romero is pretty good. In today’s training we will do something a little more demanding thinking about tomorrow. We will know if they will be available. We won’t risk any, we don’t want future problems.”

The Verdict: Good news for Spurs

Across eight league matches this season, the Argentine has made 26 clearances, 11 interceptions and 11 successful tackles, putting him in the top four for each of those metrics at Spurs.

Taking into account how the Lilywhites have conceded eight goals across the four previous games in which Romero hasn’t featured, it’s safe to say that Antonio Conte’s side could do with having him available as much as possible throughout the remainder of the season.

This update from Scaloni is definitely a positive one which should have the supporters and the coaching staff at Spurs pleased that Romero is firmly on the road to recovery.

Everyone connected to the north London club will undoubtedly have their fingers crossed that the 24-year-old will not pick up any other injury issues while away on international duty.
