Spurs have started this season quite well and remain unbeaten after 10 games, and our resident Tottenham fans in the Transfer Tavern are loving life!
However, they’re still slightly off the pace in terms of mounting a title challenge as they draw far too many games.
It’s not that they play poorly when they draw, they just don’t play well enough.
The same goes for their most recent game this weekend in which they made enough chances to beat Leicester, but didn’t quite do enough to get them over the line.
Perhaps, their shyness in front of goal has something to do with the injury to Harry Kane.
Whilst Spurs seem to play nice football there’s no focal point or meaning to their attack and without Kane they seem to be struggling to score goals.
However, this summer they signed Vincent Janssen for a handsome fee and apart from a couple of penalties, he hasn’t contributed any goals but his general play has been decent and he is perhaps adapting to the Premier League.
With Kane nearing a return, maybe it’s actually worth considering sticking with Janssen for a little longer and here are a THREE reasons why…
It might benefit Kane
When Kane became injured a number of weeks ago, it was the first time he had missed a Premier League match in over 50 games.
That’s a run stretching back to October 2014 and for a player of Kane’s size and stature that’s no mean feat.
However, it also doesn’t hold him in good stead for the future.
You only need to look at Rooney to see what constant exposure to Premier League football can do once you turn 30.
Kane has had an extended break but only because of an injury but it might be wise to let his body completely settle and return to training freely before lumping him back in which should give Janssen a few more matches to prove his worth.
It will give Janssen confidence
Not only is it important for Kane to return to fitness but it’s crucial that Janssen receives the trust from his manager and fellow players, which only comes from getting used to one another on the football pitch.
Janssen clearly has ability as we can see from his impressive goalscoring whilst at Alkmaar.
Hey, even on international duty a number of weeks ago he scored a screamer from open play (video below) so there’s certainly ability there.
Spurs just need to find a way to tap into that and get the best out of him.
Getting a good number of games under his belt is the best way to start that.
He’s not actually playing badly – just not scoring
More importantly than the others is to acknowledge that the 22-year-old striker is not even playing badly!
Merely, he hasn’t scored many goals.
His link up play is still very good and he seems confident and able on the ball and strong enough to hold off centre backs, and get the ball down at his feet.
There is obviously improvements to come but he’s only into his third month of Premier League football, so don’t think it’s all over as far as his Spurs career is concerned.
Far from it.
