Former Sunderland striker Kevin Phillips has praised the club for sealing a return for striker Danny Graham.
Black Cats manager Phil Parkinson confirmed a deal to bring Graham back to the Stadium of Light earlier this week, adding to his current centre-forward options of Will Grigg and Charlie Wyke.
After leaving Championship side Blackburn Rovers following the expiry of his contract, Graham returns to the League One side on a free transfer for a second spell on Wearside.
Despite only netting once in 42 appearances for Sunderland over a three-year spell at the Stadium of Light between 2013 and 2016, Graham made an instant impact in midweek against Aston Villa’s under-21 side in the Football League Trophy.
“I think it is a really smart signing,” Phillips told Football Insider.
“It was a difficult time for him when he was there previously and it did not go the way he liked but credit for the player wanting to come back. He wants co come back and prove people wrong.
“I watched him last year and he scored a few goals. The big thing for him is that he got off the mark during the week against Villa. I think he will be a good signing in League One.
” He is a hustler, a bustler and he gets in clever positions. It is now up to Sunderland to create chances and that was an area they struggled in last season.
Graham is an interesting signing for Sunderland and the jury may well be out on him initially based on his first spell at the club.
Just one goal previously for Sunderland was simply not good enough but Phillips seems to believe that the second coming of the 35-year-old will work out.
Time will tell…
