Sunderland boss rules out Jones swap

Rafa Benitez is set to miss out on Kenwyne Jones after Steve Bruce Rejected the chance to take Ryan Babel in exchange according to The Independent.

With Fernando Torres out for 6 weeks following surgery on a knee injury Benitez had hoped to kill two birds with one stone by off loading Ryan Babel and bringing in Jones but when asked if he had an interest in Babel Steve Bruce responded with a resounding, ‘No’.

Bruce cited the fact that he is trying to build a squad as a primary reason yet his rejection of the deal leaves Rafa in somewhat of a pickle as he only has David N’Gog and Dirk Kuyt to chose from as recognised strikers.

Babel, who has fallen out of favour at Anfield, made his situation at the club worse on Friday after an outburst on social networking site Twitter. It saw him pick up a 2 week fine as Rafa warned the player,

“If Ryan trains hard and is ready to play he will be available. If not, he won’t be available, we have to concentrate on the next game with the players we have available. I was talking with Ryan one week ago and I explained the situation very clearly to him. After the meeting everything was fine. He was working and he was on the bench and he played against Reading. After this game [against Reading] I decided he would not be on the bench and that is it.”
