Some Sunderland fans found more than one thing to celebrate on Twitter as the football in 2019 came to an end for the club – a win against Doncaster Rovers and the performance that Lynden Gooch produced throughout the encounter.
A win for Phil Parkinson’s side had been something many on Wearside have been waiting for since the beginning of November – when they beat Southend United – and the faithful will be hoping it is the start of something special, or at the very least, the start of something positive.
Gooch opened the scoring for the visitors inside the opening ten minutes, although they were pegged back just before half-time.
Chris Maguire, however, ensured the Black Cats would end 2019 with all three points with the 2-1 victory and, perhaps, help to take some pressure off of Parkinson’s shoulders.
As is the norm in the modern era, many of the club’s faithful took to Twitter to praise the efforts of Gooch, with plenty of them appearing to wax lyrical over their American star, with one fan claiming he deserves an MBE.
Here are just some of their reactions to his performance for Sunderland…
If Lynden Gooch can replicate 80% of today’s performance on a regular basis maybe, just maybe, this won’t be a lost season after all #SAFC

Thought Gooch, O’Nien, Wyke, Dobson all played well today, just what we needed #safc

Today was by far the best performance of the season. Fitness levels were top notch throughout never have I seen us close down opposition players so much in a game for a long time. Gooch on the left was unreal looks a completely different player since coming back from injury #safc

It’s been years since I saw us win away from home! Far too passive after the first 15-20mins and paid the price by conceding, but other than that totally dominated. Hume and Maguire the main attacking threats, Gooch and O’Nien typifying the endeavour we need to see every week

Defensively, we were comfortable. Looked threatening going forward as well. Gooch and Wyke very good. All the lads were superb in fairness. Ha way the lads

Look the desire and passion was there. My views still the same but today was one for the fans. The buzz when the second goal went in was class. Hume Gooch and others showed desire, passion n urgency but great result. We move on #SAFC pic.twitter.com/tFQEc7oQJk
