A number of Sunderland fans were clearly delighted with what they saw from Charlie Wyke in their 2-1 victory over Doncaster Rovers on Sunday afternoon, as many of them took to Twitter to laud the striker’s performance.
Lynden Gooch had given Phil Parkinson’s side the lead early on, however they were pegged back when Jon Taylor netted just before the half-time interval.
Chris Maguire, though, was on hand to give the Black Cats their first League One victory since the beginning of November and, perhaps, ease some of the pressure that will have been building on the manager’s shoulders in recent weeks.
Indeed, whilst Wyke did not get on the scoresheet himself, his performance out in the middle certainly did not go unnoticed by the Sunderland faithful.
Many of them lauded his efforts on social media after the final whistle, with a vast majority of them singing his praises and believing he made a huge difference to the side.
One fan commented that he “epitomised” the overall Sunderland performance, whilst another had stated that he had made all the difference.
Here are just some of their reactions to Wyke’s display…
Charlie Wyke epitomising the performance today, chasing down a clearance, not giving the defender any time, winning the ball back and winning a free kick deep in Doncaster’s half, joyous stuff. ®️

Best performance since Tranmere. TBF to Parkinson the tweaks were made. Gooch and Maguire alongside and beyond Wyke made all the difference. Hume a threat all game and Lynch comfortable left of 3, Dobson pressing. No square pegs. A bandage has been applied to the wound.

Best performance for a LONG time & 1 that finally does the shirt justice. Gooch MoM for me, but a solid team performance. Wyke lead the line well, the midfield had energy and Hume going forward looked decent. The crowd were excellent, behind the lads from start to finish #SAFC

Defensively, we were comfortable. Looked threatening going forward as well. Gooch and Wyke very good. All the lads were superb in fairness. Ha way the lads

So, my motm was the whole team (with special mentions to Wyke and Dobson). Now see what happens when you play like a team and work for each other…
