Sunderland agree deal to sign 21-year-old winger who is already playing at a “very high level”

Sunderland are closing in on another attacking addition, with Lyon winger Malick Fofana on the verge of completing a move to the Stadium of Light.

The Black Cats have reached an agreement with the French club for the 21-year-old, who has been given permission to travel for his medical ahead of putting pen to paper on a five-year contract.

Sunderland Agree Fofana Deal

Sunderland have agreed a deal worth €30 million plus add-ons to sign Lyon winger Malick Fofana, according to David Ornstein of The Athletic.

The Belgium international is now expected to undergo his medical with the newly promoted Premier League side, with the remaining paperwork the only major hurdle before the transfer can be formally completed.

Fofana has emerged as an exciting young attacker during his time in France, and former Lyon manager Pierre Sage previously praised the youngster for already performing at a “very high level”.

The winger has started the new campaign brightly, scoring twice in six appearances for Lyon. Overall, he has found the net 19 times during his two-and-a-half years with the club.

Sunderland’s deal for Fofana would make him the fourth senior arrival of the summer, following Thomas Meunier, Dayann Methalie and Jules Ahoka through the door.

The 21-year-old is now set to become another important piece of Regis Le Bris’ squad as Sunderland prepare for their return to the Premier League and a Europa League campaign.

With the deal expected to be completed before Tuesday’s deadline, Fofana could soon begin a new chapter in England.
