Even though the Black Cats are now playing their football in League One, Sunderland are still one of the biggest clubs out there. The proof of that can be found both in their trophy cabinet and big transfer deals over the years. Of course it wasn’t that long ago that they were still plying their trade in the Premier League and, with much deeper pockets back then, the transfers they made were more impressive than they are now.
Precisely for that reason, it’s not exactly surprising to see that their current record-holder for the most expensive signing to date is still Didier Ndong – a player who was purchased from FC Lorient for a huge fee of £18m during the 2016/17 campaign.
When he arrived, Ndong also eclipsed the previous top-dog around, Asamoah Gyan, and the £14.4m transfer fee that saw him move to Sunderland from Stade Rennais in 2010/11. Some years down the line, they would also acquire the services of Steven Fletcher from Wolverhampton Wanderers for £13.6m and the forward still sits in third place on this list.
And if you thought purchases were impressive, wait until you take a look at their most lucrative exits. In 2017/18, Sunderland sold Jordan Pickford to Everton for a record fee of £25.6m – a sum that is yet to be eclipsed and considering their current situation, it’s likely that doesn’t change any time soon.
Still, before Pickford, there was Darren Bent and his move to Aston Villa in 2010/11 for £19.3m, which is still the second biggest departure from the club. One year after that, they sold a 21-year-old Jordan Henderson to Liverpool for £16.2m – the rest, as they say, is history.
It goes without saying that Sunderland are one of those teams that have had quite a few big names don their colours over the years. And when it comes to famous transfers, the big arrival of Bent in 2009/10 is up there with the best of them. The centre-forward would end up having quite a stellar stint at the club and, among other things, was also sold for a record fee relatively quickly after his arrival.
Of course, the manner in which he left is still on the minds of many fans but that is also a part of the reason why his transfer was so famous in the first place.
But we also have to mention the iconic players like Niall Quinn or Kevin Phillips whose transfers ended up having an incredible impact on the club as a whole. And of course that there are more, maybe even too many to count, but the likes of Jermain Defoe, the legendary captain Kevin Ball or the iconic Charlie Hurley are some we have to mention as well.
