Sunderland: Update emerges as Jerry Yates transfer race hots up

Jerry Yates Sunderland target

Sunderland face competition from Swindon Town in the race to sign Jerry Yates after it was confirmed they would be making an official offer in the next 24 hours.

With the League One season now officially over, Black Cats boss Phil Parkinson will be preparing for a third successive campaign in England’s third tier, having failed to gain a play-off place.

Which Sunderland manager has the best win percentage of all time?

Transfer rumours are coming in thick and fast ahead of the summer transfer window and a link to former Swindon Town loanee Yates emerged.

The 23-year-old striker scored 13 goals in 31 games on loan with the Robins in League Two before returning to parent club Rotherham.

With Sunderland interested, Yates’ former club Swindon have now confirmed that they will be making an offer in the next 48 hours but that they know of another club who have already submitted a transfer bid.

“Rotherham have received a bid from another club,” Robins’ boss Richie Wellens told BBC Radio Wiltshire as quoted by Sunderland Echo.

“We will put a bid in over the next couple of days but the only problem is that it won’t be as much as the other club has offered.”

Yates was expected to leave Rotherham due to his contract expiry in June but Rotherham opted to activate the option to extend by a further year, thus allowing to sell him on for a price.

Sunderland need to find some goal scoring options ahead of next year and Yates showed at the County Ground last season that he knows where the back of the net is.

With just one year left on his Millers contract and a Transfermarkt value of £90,000, he would surely be well worth a punt from the Black Cats, especially given he is still only 23-years-old.

If they aren’t the club Wellens suggested had already made a bid, they should definitely look to make an offer sooner rather than later, otherwise they will miss out on a potential bargain.
