The Boro fans at the Transfer Tavern are excited about the prospect of Garry Monk taking them back to the top.
Former Swansea and Leeds United boss, Garry Monk is preparing for his first season in charge as Middlesbrough manager.
The recently relegated side had a season to forget during the 2016/17 campaign which saw them finish 19th, only four points ahead of Sunderland in 20th.
Following on from stepping down as Leeds manager, Monk’s objective will be to get Boro back into the top flight at the first time of asking but to do that, surely some changes need to be made.
Whether that is bringing new players in, letting old ones go or simply mixing the squad up a little, if Monk wants to achieve his goals then he’ll have to do something different.
With that being said, our landlord has pinpointed TWO players who surely will not feature in Garry Monk’s first match-day squad next season….
Stewart Downing
Stewart Downing has already been informed by his new boss, Garry Monk, that he doesn’t feature in his plans for next season.
With two seasons left on his contract at Boro it is likely Downing will be happy to see it out with his hometown club.
The 32-year-old has had a decent career, 408 Premier League appearances and 37 top flight goals is nothing to be ashamed of, but if you don’t feature in the boss’ plans, don’t expect to play.
Cristhian Stuani
Cristhian Stuani made 23 Premier League appearances last season but only managed a return of four goals.
Now it is unfair to put all the blame on him, no striker within the Boro ranks did very well at all last season.
However, at 30 years of age and with a few younger options available to him, maybe Garry Monk will be looking to have Stuani feature in the cup games as opposed to the important league clashes, such as the opening day of the season.
