Manchester United supporters in the Transfer Tavern are eagerly awaiting news of new summer recruits as the club’s transfer activity is poised to increase.

The news of Romelu Lukaku’s potential transfer to Manchester United was the cause of feverish excitement for our resident Red Devils in the Transfer Tavern. United fans’ eagerness for new signings will reportedly be met with purposeful action from the club as Mourinho looks to forge a squad that will compete on all four major fronts this forthcoming season.

In addition to the frenzied transfer speculation, the club departs for their pre-season tour of the United States this weekend, an opportunity for many fringe players to showcase their importance to the self-proclaimed Special One. While many of these players will be hoping to impress, the likelihood of the situation is that some will be sold. Our landlord has decided to look at two players who will surely be absent from United’s matchday squad against West Ham.

Chris Smalling

The arrival of Victor Lindelöf can be perceived as a damming assessment of Smalling’s significance to Jose Mourinho’s Red Devils. His talents were used sparingly last season, Smalling only started 13 league games for United, and the arrival of a new centre-back looks set to conclude his Old Trafford career.

With so many players ahead of him in the United pecking order, Smalling will surely depart this Summer. There’s no point for such an experienced defender to regress on the periphery of United’s first-team, he must leave and rediscover his best form.

Ashley Young

Another fringe player who looks poised to depart Manchester United is Ashley Young – ironically, he is not that young anymore. Similarly to Smalling, Young was utilised as a rotational option – deemed inadequate for a consistent role in United’s first-team. He only made eight starts in the Premier League last season and at the age of 31, his best days have most likely passed.

United are primed to continue their spending, and accordingly, it seems that Young will be no longer required at the club for the upcoming season. The most suitable solution for all parties involved is that Young is sold, to enable the Englishman to conclude his career with consistent first-team opportunities elsewhere.
