Catania’s Japanese striker Takayuki Morimoto is said to be very interested in rumours that Manchester United are keen to sign him, according to the News of the World. Morimoto has been one of Catania’s best performers for a few years and reportedly impressed United boss Alex Ferguson when he won the Most Valuable Player award at the Manchester United Premier Cup in 2003.
21 year old Morimoto scored in the midweek for Catania in a cup clash but his post-match interview was dominated not by his performance but by the suggested move with the striker revealing that he had asked his agent about it. Morimoto revealed
“I have read about the interest from Manchester United in me. I called my agent and he said to me he had not had any contact with the English team. I like the Premier League, since I’ve seen it on television, although La Liga and Serie A are also interesting.”
Morimoto was quick to brush off rumours of an immediate transfer though, affirming
“Nevertheless, the transfer market does not interest me now but only Catania staying up.”
Ferguson is likely to see Morimoto’s comments as a show of interest though and may move for the promising Japanese star sooner rather than later with Dimitar Berbatov failing to impress and more strike power in need at Old Trafford as shown in this weekend’s defeat to Aston Villa.
Morimoto has 3 goals from 12 Serie A games so far this season.
