Whilst many suspected Manchester United’s move for Inter Milan’s Wesley Sneijder was dead in the water, latest reports emanating from Italy suggest that it may be back on.
Arguably the longest running transfer saga of this summer looks set to come to a head in the next week with Sir Alex Ferguson still keen to add the Dutch playmaker to his squad. Although their class finally showed in their opening Premier League match against West Brom last weekend, ultimately winning the game 2-1, United initially lacked the final ball to unlock the opposition defence. This, amongst many other qualities, have been left diminished in the United squad following the retirement of Paul Scholes.
Whilst Sneijder is not a like-for-like replacement for Scholes, his ability to thread a ball through an opposition defence is second to none, and should he arrive at Old Trafford, it will likely be to the joy of strikers Javier Hernandez and Wayne Rooney. Combine this with the skill of Ashley Young, Nani, and Antonio Valencia on the wings, and it is very hard to pick any holes in an illustrious United attack.
In order to add this final piece of the jigsaw, TuttomercatoWeb are reporting that Ferguson has been sanctioned to spend up to €40M for the 27-year old, which would take United’s overall summer spending to somewhere in the region of £80M. With Samuel Eto’o also possibly leaving Inter, rumours have risen of Dimitar Berbatov moving in the opposite direction to help sweeten the deal for Sneijder, hower, it is believed that Inter are more interested in Manchester City’s Carlos Tevez.
