Manchester United seem set for a huge summer of gigantic spending as Jose Mourinho looks to transform a squad that finished a lowly sixth in the Premier League this season into genuine title competitors.

But our landlord reckons who leaves Old Trafford could be as interesting as who comes in, especially for the rumour-mad punters here at the Transfer Tavern. The Red Devils gaffer has contended with a large, over-inflated squad this season and after a full campaign to run the rule over every player, cuts will surely be made.

That’s great news for some of the Premier League’s other clubs like West Ham. Mourinho may deem some of them no longer fit for purpose but the vast majority of players on the books at Old Trafford have the quality to help push the Hammers up the table.

With that in mind, our landlord has taken a look at three forgotten-about gems, who’ve been forced to watch from the sidelines for much of the season, that West Ham should look to pluck from the Red Devils’ ranks before the close of the summer transfer window.

Adnan Januzaj

Adnan Januzaj hardly made a mark during his season-long loan at Sunderland, amassing no goals and just three assists in 25 Premier League appearances as the Black Cats plummeted out of the top flight. But let’s not forget the incredible potential the mercurial creator showed just a couple of seasons ago, enough to earn him six caps in a highly-competitive Belgium national team, and that he’s still just 22 years of age – more than young enough to put his career back on the right path.

With opportunities to do so seemingly limited under Mourinho, a move away this summer seems likely. West Ham could be the perfect home to give Januzaj the confidence, affection and game-time he needs to have another crack at becoming a top Premier League star.

Ashley Young

Ashley Young may not be the two-time PFA Team of the Year winger who arrived at Old Trafford in 2011 following a whole host of career-affecting injuries, but he’s still a quality player whose game now boasts experience, versatility, leadership and an understanding of team-work as well.

Indeed, Young has established himself as an important squad player at United, filling in as a wing-back and even a full-back when required and putting in a level of work-rate you wouldn’t expect from a player so attack-minded in his younger years.

The 31-year-old still offers quality deliveries from out wide with either foot, which could make him the chief supplier to Andy Carroll at the London Stadium.

Sam Johnstone

Following poor campaigns from Adrian and Darren Randolph, West Ham’s goalkeeping department seems due a bit of a shake-up this summer. A number of options are likely on the club’s radar already but if Slaven Bilic is prepared to take a punt on a young, English player, Sam Johnstone could be an interesting solution.

The shot-stopper has represented the Three Lions over 30 times at youth level and consistently impressed in the Football League throughout various loan spells, including a 22-game stint at Aston Villa this season that saw him produce 40 saves and eight clean sheets in the Championship.

There has been talk of Villa signing the 24-year-old permanently but with Steve Bruce preparing for another season in the Championship, the chance to prove himself in the top flight with the Hammers would surely be too good for Johnstone to turn down.
