Manchester United face a tricky FA Cup tie against Preston this evening, knowing a win will see them progress to the quarter finals of a competition in which the two favourites – Chelsea and Manchester City – have already been eliminated.
The FA Cup represents United’s only realistic chance of silverware this season, with the gap between themselves and Chelsea at the top of the Premier League table surely too much.
It has been a disappointing season for United in many ways, when you consider the amount of money the club spent in the summer on new signings the likes of Angel Di Maria, Ander Herrera, Daley Blind and Radamel Falcao.
A top four finish and a trophy would be a respectable finish however, whilst an increase in the goals for category wouldn’t go amiss either when you consider the attacking talent they boast.

Robin van Persie v Hull City
Robin van Persie rediscovered his goalscoring touch in style in late November as United beat Hull comfortably 3-0. The Dutch striker took the ball on the edge of the box, went past one defender before smashing the ball into the top corner to end his own mini goal drought and wrap up the three points for United.
It has hardly been a vintage season for van Persie however, with this the pick of the goals the former Arsenal man has scored this term.
Maraoune Fellaini v West Brom
The Belgian midfielder has produced some improved performances for United this season, with his first Premier League goal a special effort.
Fellaini showed all the touch, skill and power United thought they had paid £28million for in the summer of 2013, when he controlled a deep cross, cut inside and smashed the ball into the top corner beyond Ben Foster to level the scores.
United went on to draw the game 2-2 at the Hawthorns.
Radamel Falcao v Aston Villa
The Colombian has been a disappointment since his arrival at Old Trafford, with his second Premier League goal of the season at Aston Villa in December the type of finish United fans thought they were going to witness week in week out.
Ashley Young showed excellent pace down the left flank to beat his man and swing in a perfect cross. Falcao escaped his marker, and powered a header back across Brad Guzan to make it 1-1 and rescue a point for United.
The quality of the finish was proof of just what a deadly striker Falcao can be – United fans just haven’t seen it often enough.
Wayne Rooney v Liverpool
For Manchester United fans – and Wayne Rooney himself – there are fewer sweeter moments in a season than a goal against Liverpool.
The England striker/midfielder found space on the edge of the box during the fixture in December, and cooly side-footed the ball past Brad Jones in the Liverpool goal after some excellent wing play from Antonio Valencia.
The goal put United 1-0 up, and set them on the way to a 3-0 win against their bitterest of rivals – surely their result of the season so far.
Angel Di Maria v Leicester City 
A few eyebrows were raised when Manchester United paid a staggering £59.6 million for Angel Di Maria in the summer. But this sublime goal against Leicester City in September went some way to suggesting it was money well spent.
The Argentine collected the ball from Wayne Rooney and drove at the Foxes defence before showing intelligence and class to coolly lob the ball over the goalkeeper under pressure. An early contender for goal of the season surely although it’s quality was overshadowed somewhat as United lost an unbelievable game 5-3 having led 2-0 and then 3-1, to the team currently rooted to the bottom of the Premier League.
