The Arsenal fans in the Transfer Tavern today are hoping for a big finish to the season for the Gunners.

Arsene Wenger will be hoping to bring some early League Cup silverware to the Emirates Stadium, in a bid to build momentum going into the final stages of the season. Arsenal, along with a number of other teams, are fighting it out for two Champions League spots come to the end of the season, and our barman thinks that Arsene Wenger can’t afford to have any passengers along the way.

If Wenger is to go out in a blaze of glory by winning a Carabao Cup and Europa League double, he needs his whole squad performing at the top of their game.

Indeed, Arsenal have seemed to turn a corner in recent months, and getting rid of some deadwood in the summer could be the clearout Wenger has needed to do for quite some time. Our landlord has taken a look at two of the players that could be moved on if they don’t step up…

Danny Welbeck

The England striker has all the potential in the world to succeed but it always seems to our regulars that something is missing with him – be it injuries or not building momentum enough to sustain a long run in the team.

A big problem for Welbeck is that he’s yet to really find his position. He’s not looked great out wide or through the middle, and so it’s tough for Wenger to give him a run of games as a result.

The landscape at Arsenal seems to be changing and if Welbeck wants to be a major part of it in the future, he has to start delivering on a more consistent level than his 5 goals this season suggest.

Petr Cech

The 35-year-old goalkeeper was a surprise transfer from Chelsea by most of the regulars standards, but there’s no doubting Cech’s history as the number one guy between the sticks. However, now the keeper is ageing more towards 40, Wenger has to assess if it’s time to bring in a younger replacement for the Czech international.

Cech could be Arsenal’s keeper for the next 2-3 years, but if Wenger has a seed of doubt about Cech he has to show that he has got more life left him in at the top level.

A strong second-half of the season could change everything, but if he struggles, it could be time to move on.
