Following their 5-0 thrashing of Southampton in the FA Cup fourth round on Saturday – with a starting XI that contained a number of changes – the Arsenal supporters in the Football Transfer Tavern will be happy that their squad is in good shape at the end of the January window.

Danny Welbeck and Theo Walcott both showed how they can support the likes of Alexis Sanchez and Olivier Giroud with a brace and a hat-trick respectively at St Mary’s at the weekend, but some of the fans standing at the bar may be concerned that they lack that quality in depth at the back.

Though, they were brought down to earth when they were downed 2-1 by Watford at the Emirates Stadium on Tuesday evening.

While they will still harbour hopes of competing for the Premier League title, as well as in the FA Cup and Champions League, Gunners boss Arsene Wenger may regret not strengthening certain areas in his side if any injuries are picked up in the upcoming weeks and months – and the landlord knows that’s a distinct possibility with their luck in recent years!

These TWO January transfer mistakes could cost Arsenal this season…

Not bringing in competition for Bellerin

The Spaniard has struggled with injury and a loss of form in recent weeks, but with Arsene Wenger seemingly not fancying Carl Jenkinson or the injury-hit Mathieu Debuchy to cover him at right-back, the 21-year-old has maintained his spot in the starting XI.

When he has missed out, it is Gabriel that has filled in at full-back and if Arsenal are to remain a strong threat in the three competitions that they are left in this season, the fans standing at the bar would have liked more depth than they currently have.

The landlord will certainly be hoping that Bellerin isn’t ruled out for a consistent run of games between now and the end of the campaign.

Not bringing in a keeper to push Cech

Like Hector Bellerin, the goalkeeper certainly hasn’t been at his best this season, and the Arsenal fans that frequent the tavern have been especially disappointed with some of the goals he has conceded and his record at saving penalties – he hasn’t kept a single one since his move from Chelsea in 2015.

With back-up stopper David Ospina failing to start a Premier League match all campaign, it seems as though Gunners manager Arsene Wenger doesn’t trust the Colombian in top flight games, which the landlord feels may have perhaps allowed some complacency to creep into Cech’s game.

Wenger is sure to look to add a keeper that will seriously compete with the former Chelsea man during the summer, but the fans standing at the bar will just hope that the failure to bring one in now doesn’t cost them in the coming weeks and months.
