Rangers are back into second place in the Scottish Premier League after a vital 2-0 win over Motherwell this weekend and boy are their fans here in the Tavern happy about it!
In their first season back in the top-flight, Gers have done well to somewhat keep pace with runaway leaders Celtic but it looks like European football will be on the cards at Ibrox once again next season.
But with the January transfer window coming to a close, talk has turned to how Rangers’ transfer business has been this winter, in a particularly quieter window than usual for Mark Warburton and his men.
We’re used to seeing a lot of activity at Ibrox during the January weeks but this time, only three names have come through the doors. Along with the quiet transfer activity, it’s thought that a couple of transfer mistakes have been made by club bosses this window and the Gers fans here in the pub aren’t all that happy about it.
So with that in mind, here’s 2 January transfer mistakes that could cost Rangers this season…
Not spending enough money
Rangers aren’t the cash-rich club they were a few years back or we’d have seen huge names joining the club this summer, so it just didn’t happen of course.
Adjusting to the current financial situation has been a big part of the rise and fall of the club over the past five years or so but you get the feeling that Rangers just haven’t laid down enough of a marker in the window this time around.
They’re supposed to be one of the biggest clubs in Britain, let alone in Scotland and some of their business and at times, inability to bring in bigger names could cost them as the season grows older.
Not having a permanent option on Jon Toral
Whilst Jon Toral is currently working to get back to full fitness, there’s plenty of Rangers supporters here in the pub that feel the Spanish forward would have made a cracking permanent addition to the side.
The Arsenal youngster shone whilst on loan at Birmingham City last season and you might have liked to see a bit more ambition from the Rangers board in their deal to bring him in.
Perhaps adding a permanent option at the end of the season or evening submitting an offer right away because this is a very talented youngster indeed.
