Our Liverpool fans here in the Transfer Tavern are hoping that the current form continues long into 2018 and the Reds really start to benefit from Jurgen Klopp’s style of play.

Klopp in this January window has finally addressed the issue in his defence by signing Virgil Van Dijk. However, by the summer window, Klopp will have to revitalise his squad and freshen things up to move forward as a football club.

There’s a couple of players that our regulars have noticed are simply not pulling their weight in the squad and should be given the final months of this season to either shape up or get shipped out.

Klopp has to be ruthless if he is to take this Reds team forward and by shipping out few passengers in the summer maybe the type of action that can cause a massive reaction.

With that in mind, our landlord takes a look at two of the current players that need to pull their football socks up…

Simon Mignolet

The favoured goalkeeper of the two has not done enough of a good job to make Klopp give him the number one shirt on a permanent basis. Klopp has ofter swapped and changed with Loris Karius, with the German taking precedent over the Belgian in recent weeks.

If Mignolet wants regular football and doesn’t want to leave Anfield, these next six months are going to be huge for him as Liverpool look set to move on and really start to push the top three teams hard.

He’s shown nothing to suggest that he warrants a weekly starting berth.

Jordan Henderson

The Liverpool captain has come in for some criticism this year – some of our regulars think unfairly. But his games haven’t been at the level most would expect him to be at for a captain of the club. The Reds are evolving and with the likes of Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Gini Wijnaldum upping their game in recent months, it’s going to be harder to guarantee a first-team spot.

He isn’t a bad player by any means, but he doesn’t seem like the sort of player to be able to drag his team through a rough patch as a captain should.

Henderson really needs to push this team forward and to the next level if he is to impress Klopp enough and remain the team leader.
