Our Liverpool fans here inside the Transfer Tavern are still thinking that Jurgen Klopp could have done more in the winter window to strengthen the squad.

Liverpool brought in Virgil Van Dijk very early on in the window and many of our regulars thought that after the Philippe Coutinho deal was done, Klopp would further reinforce. Obviously, this wasn’t the case and Liverpool are possibly still left with more questions than answers at the back.

Klopp has brought an attacking finesse to Anfield and the style of play really gets the local Reds up off their stools in the bar. However, they also have to endure the inconsistent backline that has held Liverpool back this season from really propelling themselves forward in the search for Klopp’s first bit of silverware.

Within the Reds squad, there is a couple of players that have potentially ruined their personal chances of reaching this year’s World Cup, and our landlord takes a look why…

Simon Mignolet

The keeper has been as inconsistent in between the sticks as his defence has been. With Klopp failing to settle on a No.1 on a permanent basis, this has hindered Mignolet into gaining confidence and momentum in the team. In fact, now he’s been dropped altogether, which can’t be good for his World Cup chances.

As the toing and froing continues this season, it will shine a bad light on Mignolet and many of the regulars would be surprised if he adds to the 20 caps he already has for his country.

Emre Can

Emre Can was a target for Juventus in the winter window and has the German’s contract is running out at the end of the season, many have some doubt over his commitment to the club. With that in mind, Klopp may restrict his appearances as he looks to build for next season.

Also with the midfield open to a move, the loyalty towards Klopp and visa-versa may tarnish the two’s relationship, with Can taking a more bench warming role in the final months of the season.
