Our Manchester United fans here in the Transfer Tavern are hoping to progress into the next round of the FA Cup today against fellow Premier League side, Huddersfield Town.

The Red Devils will be hoping to mount an FA Cup charge in a bid to bring some silverware to Old Trafford again this season, as it looks as if the Premier League is out of reach and realistically, not many are giving them a chance of winning the Champions League just yet.

United last won the cup under former boss Louis van Gaal, in his last match at the club and stopping Man City winning all three domestic trophies must be an appealing notion at the Theatre of Dreams. With Jose Mourinho needed to get back to winning ways, he’ll be hoping for a similar result and performance that saw his Red Devils pick up the three points a couple of weeks back against the Terriers.

With important matches ahead, especially in Europe, Mourinho could use this opportunity to rotate the squad and bring in some fringe or out of form players to impress the boss. Our landlord takes a look at two players that need to level up against Huddersfield today…

Paul Pogba

The French midfield maestro has had a tough time of it in recent weeks, being hauled off twice in three games and dropped, coincidently against today’s opponents a couple of weeks back. Pogba needs to make a big statement today and show Mourinho why he shouldn’t be benching him.

Many may say ‘it’s just Huddersfield’ but a string pulling display and getting back to his best and early season form will speak volumes about his character.

Chris Smalling

After the Newcastle defeat, Chris Smalling was the scapegoat for many fans with his dive leading to the freekick that caused the winning goal. Smalling has had an up and down time at United over the past eight years, however, a commanding game at the back could do both the team and himself the world of good.

With the return of Eric Bailly coming soon, the competition for the centre-back role hots up ahead of both the World Cup and the summer transfer window. Smalling needs to grab this opportunity of redemption with both hands.
