Crystal Palace supporters in the Football Transfer Tavern have seen their squad strengthened during the January transfer window, with the latest arrival set to be left-back Patrick van Aanholt from Premier League rivals Sunderland.
The Dutchman will follow fellow new-boy Jeffrey Schlupp to Selhurst Park and with the Eagles currently in the relegation zone, he may not be the last addition before the window slams shut on Tuesday – the fans standing at the bar will hope that more new faces will help them move away from the bottom three.
Manager Sam Allardyce has been linked with a number of players this month and after losing six of their last seven top flight matches to lie in the relegation zone, the landlord of the Tavern will be seriously worried that they could go down to the Championship at the end of the campaign.
These TWO players could follow Van Aanholt to Palace before Tuesday’s 11pm deadline…
Gabriel Obertan
The former Manchester United and Newcastle United forward might not be one of the first names on the lips of possible additions for the Palace supporters standing at the bar, but the Premier League strugglers could certainly do a lot worse.
The 27-year-old is available on a free transfer after being released by Russian outfit Anzhi Makhachkala but as he is able to play on either wing, in midfield or as a number 10, his versatility could appeal to Eagles boss Sam Allardyce – possibly more so than the Eagles fans that frequent the Tavern.
Obertan scored two English top flight goals in 72 appearances for the Red Devils and the Magpies previously, and would be a potential replacement for Andros Townsend, who has been linked with a loan return to Newcastle – the landlord isn’t sold on this one though.
Carl Jenkinson
Crystal Palace manager Sam Allardyce has made no secret of his desire to strengthen in the full-back positions with the additions of Jeffrey Schlupp and now Patrick van Aanholt, and after boosting his option on the left-hand side, he could now turn his attentions to the right – the Eagles fans standing at the bar know their defence needs freshening up.
The Eagles have been linked with Arsenal’s Carl Jenkinson this month and Allardyce will be hoping to push through a deal for the 24-year-old before the window slams shut on Tuesday.
It would give the right-back a permanent new home after a number of loan spells away from the Gunners over the course of the past few seasons – the landlord has always liked what he has seen of Jenkinson.
