The optimism around Big Sam’s arrival at Crystal Palace has quickly eroded amongst our Crystal Palace punters in the Transfer Tavern.
The former England boss was expected to lead Palace to a similar survival project to the one he managed with Sunderland last season. However, things have not quite gone to plan for the Eagles especially after they recently suffered a 4-0 defeat to Allardyce’s former employers.
Our landlord is genuinely concerned for Palace’s safety and with time seemingly running out in the Premier League season, it is hard to see what lies ahead for a Palace side that reached the FA Cup final as recently as last year.
What our landlord isn’t concerned about is selling pints to the Palace fans who seemingly have to drown their sorrows every week, but there has been many a conversation over what is wrong.
With all that said, here are two extra things that could ruin Palace’s season…
Christian Benteke not firing
It would be too kind to say that Benteke has been in good form this year following his move from Liverpool.
Our landlord was certainly expecting more from the big Belgian and feels if he continues to disappoint – Palace could well be relegated.
To be fair to Benteke, he leads the Palace scoring charts with nine league goals this year but the reputation that proceeds him heightens the expectation on his shoulders. It also hasn’t helped that Palace have not had many other contributors in terms of goal scorers this year.
Fan unrest
The Palaces fans’ mood at Selhurst Park during the Sunderland game was simply awful and you could see the desolation on their faces.
The mood of the club and keeping positivity in a relegation scrap is vital but if the fans are not on side, Selhurst Park may well become toxic for Palace as opposed for the fortress it should be.
Palace’s defensive issues have not helped as they have the fourth worst defence in the Premier League and it is evident to see in the Transfer Tavern that the Palace punters are struggling to get behind their side.
The club could really do with coming together and failure to do so may have a detrimental effect on the club’s position at the end of the season.
